Tata Punch EV

The Punch EV offers two distinct powertrain options: a 25 kWh battery powers an electric motor producing 80.46 bhp (60 kW) and 114 Nm of torque, geared towards efficient city driving with a claimed range of 315 km. The Long Range variant uses a larger 35 kWh battery paired with a more powerful electric motor delivering 120.69 bhp (90 kW) and 190 Nm of torque, offering a claimed range of 421 km and quicker acceleration. 

Both are front-wheel drive. The Standard Range achieves 0-100 km/h in around 13.5 seconds, while the Long Range manages it in a quicker 9.5 seconds. Top speed is likely limited to around 140 km/h for both. Three driving modes (Eco, City, Sport) allow drivers to prioritize range or performance. Multi-level regenerative braking helps to recover energy and enhance efficiency.

Ride and Handling

The Tata Punch EV offers a comfortable ride quality, well-suited for urban environments. Its compact dimensions and light steering make it easy to maneuver through city traffic. The suspension setup is tuned for comfort, effectively absorbing most bumps and potholes. 

The electric powertrain delivers instant torque, resulting in smooth and linear acceleration, particularly noticeable in city driving conditions. The absence of engine noise contributes to a quieter and more relaxed cabin experience. 

The 190 mm ground clearance provides confidence when tackling speed breakers and uneven road surfaces. While not designed for spirited cornering, it offers adequate stability for everyday driving.

Inside, the Punch EV sees a significant upgrade, particularly in the higher trims. It comfortably seats five adults. The boot space is a practical 366 liters, good for daily errands and weekend trips. The dashboard layout is modern, often featuring a layered design and body-colored accents depending on the variant. 

A key highlight is the digital instrument cluster (7-inch or a larger 10.25-inch unit in higher trims) and a touchscreen infotainment system (also 7-inch or 10.25-inch) that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Features like automatic climate control are available in mid to top trims, and some variants even boast ventilated front seats and a voice-assisted electric sunroof. 

The gear lever is replaced by a rotary dial or a drive selector. Clever storage spaces are integrated throughout the cabin. Some top-end models also feature a small frunk (front trunk) for added practicality.

The Punch EV retains the familiar and robust design language of its ICE counterpart, albeit with subtle EV differentiators. It measures 3857 mm in length, 1742 mm in width, and 1633 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2445 mm. 

The front fascia gets a closed-off grille area, often with a charging port integrated, and distinctive LED daytime running lights that connect across the front. The side profile maintains the Punch's upright stance and prominent wheel arches, while the rear features the signature Y-shaped LED tail lamps. Alloy wheel designs are specific to the EV and vary by trim. 

With a ground clearance of 190 mm, it offers a reassuring ride over less-than-perfect roads. Expect a range of vibrant color options, some possibly unique to the EV version. The absence of an exhaust pipe is the most obvious visual cue to its electric nature.

Safety is a key focus for Tata Motors, and the Punch EV comes equipped with a good list of features. Standard safety includes six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP (Electronic Stability Program), hill hold control, and rear parking sensors. Higher trims may also offer additional safety features like a 360-degree camera and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). The robust build quality, a hallmark of Tata vehicles, also contributes to passenger safety. While official Global NCAP ratings for the Punch EV are awaited, the ICE Punch has a 5-star adult safety rating, suggesting a strong foundation.

The Tata Punch EV enters a potentially emerging segment of compact electric SUVs. It will likely compete with future electric micro-SUVs and could also draw comparisons with the lower-end variants of slightly larger electric SUVs. Its key rivals will be determined as the EV market evolves, but its unique positioning as an electric micro-SUV gives it a distinct advantage for now. Its success will depend on how it stacks up against future competitors in terms of range, features, and price.
