MG Windsor EV

The 2025 MG Windsor EV redefines India’s electric vehicle landscape as a spacious, feature-rich crossover utility vehicle (CUV) that blends sedan comfort with SUV practicality. Offered in three variants—Excite, Exclusive, and Essence—it features a 38 kWh battery (134 hp) with a 331 km range, upgradable to a 50.6 kWh pack (460 km) in mid-2025. Priced from ₹13.50 lakh (ex-showroom), it boasts a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a 604-liter boot, and a futuristic design with connected LED lights. Built on a born-EV platform, it’s a family-friendly hit, though touchscreen-heavy controls and limited range challenge its edge. Its innovative Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) scheme keeps costs low, making it India’s top-selling EV with over 20,000 units delivered by April 2025.

overview

The 2025 MG Windsor EV has quickly become a game-changer in India’s electric vehicle market. Since its launch in September 2024, it has surpassed 20,000 deliveries by April 2025, making it the country’s best-selling EV. With prices starting at ₹13.50 lakh to ₹15.50 lakh (ex-showroom), the Windsor EV is offered in three variants—Excite, Exclusive, and Essence—and boasts a unique Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option. This innovative pricing model drops the base price to ₹9.99 lakh, with an additional ₹3.5/km battery rental.

As a 5-seater CUV, the Windsor EV is built on a dedicated EV platform and offers a roomy cabin with a 186 mm ground clearance and a massive 604-liter boot. Its planned battery upgrade in April 2025, which will increase the pack size to 50.6 kWh, promises a range of up to 460 km, making it a strong contender against the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV400, and Hyundai Creta Electric. While the MG Windsor EV excels in space, affordability, and tech, it faces challenges with its range and touchscreen-heavy controls, which can be distracting while driving.

engine and performance

The Windsor EV is equipped with a 38 kWh lithium-ion battery paired with a front-axle permanent magnet synchronous motor, producing 134 hp and 200 Nm of torque. This combination allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in a respectable 9.8 seconds. The ARAI-claimed range of 331 km is reduced to 250-280 km in real-world mixed driving, according to user feedback. However, a 50.6 kWh battery upgrade set for April 2025 will boost the range to 460 km, putting it on par with some of its rivals, including the Tata Nexon EV.

Charging is efficient, with a 7.4 kW AC charger taking approximately 6.5 hours to charge the battery from 0-100%. Alternatively, a 50 kW DC fast charger can charge the battery from 0-80% in just 55 minutes. The Windsor EV offers four driving modes—Eco, Eco+, Normal, and Sport—which adjust throttle response and efficiency. The Eco+ mode limits speed to 80 km/h for better efficiency, which can be useful for long city commutes.

While the Windsor EV delivers smooth, instant torque for quick urban overtakes, highway cruising feels adequate but lacks excitement. Regenerative braking is smooth, though it lacks paddle adjustability, which could improve driving engagement.

Ride and Handling

The Windsor EV feels planted on the road, thanks to its low center of gravity, which comes from its skateboard platform. Despite its 1,500 kg weight, the vehicle handles urban streets with ease, thanks to its 186 mm ground clearance. The suspension—MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear—prioritizes comfort, absorbing small potholes and road imperfections with ease. However, the cabin can feel a bit jarring when encountering sharp bumps, particularly with the 18-inch wheels, which are stiffer than the 17-inch wheels on the base trim.

Steering is light and responsive at low speeds, making tight parking and maneuvering easy. At higher speeds, the steering firms up, providing better stability on highways. While the vehicle does well on curves with minimal body roll, it’s not intended to be a corner-carver. Road noise becomes noticeable above 40 km/h, and the absence of a rear wiper is a minor inconvenience in the rain. Overall, the Windsor EV excels in city commuting and short trips, though it can feel a bit firm on longer journeys.

interior

Inside, the Windsor EV offers a premium, tech-forward cabin that makes a lasting impression. The centerpiece is the 15.6-inch touchscreen (10.1-inch on the base trim), which controls nearly all major functions, including wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Jio-powered apps, and more than 80 connected features. The dashboard is clean, with knight-black upholstery and gold accents, adding a touch of elegance. Sustainable wood trim further elevates the cabin’s appeal.

The front seats are ventilated and powered, with 6-way adjustment for the driver and 4-way adjustment for the passenger. The real highlight, however, is the rear seats, which recline to 135°, providing a business-class level of comfort. The 604-liter boot is vast, ideal for family trips or large luggage. A fixed infinity glass roof allows for natural light to flood the cabin, enhancing the feeling of spaciousness. However, the heavy reliance on the touchscreen for controls can be distracting, and the firm rear thigh support may not be ideal for taller passengers. Despite this, the Windsor EV’s interior space is impressive, rivaling that of larger SUVs like the Tata Harrier.

exterior

The MG Windsor EV stands out with its distinctive crossover design, blending sleek lines with a touch of quirkiness. At 4,295 mm long, 1,850 mm wide, and 1,677 mm tall, it offers a spacious cabin supported by a 2,700 mm wheelbase. The front of the vehicle features a full-width LED DRL bar, low-set projector headlamps, and an illuminated MG badge, creating a futuristic look without a traditional grille. Flush door handles and a floating roof effect, achieved through blacked-out pillars, contribute to its premium appearance.

The vehicle rides on 18-inch diamond-cut alloys (215/55 R18) in higher trims, with the base trim getting 17-inch wheels (215/60 R17) for a slightly softer ride. The Windsor EV is available in four elegant colors—Turquoise Green, Starburst Black, Pearl White, and Clay Beige—each adding an understated charm, with Turquoise Green being the standout color. The connected LED taillights and short bonnet emphasize the vehicle's AeroGlide design philosophy, though the lack of functional roof rails is a slight downside. Its 186 mm ground clearance makes it ideal for urban roads but limits its off-road potential.

safety

Safety features in the Windsor EV include six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, hill-start and descent assist, and all-wheel disc brakes, which come as standard across all variants. Additional features include a 360-degree camera, rear sensors, and a tire pressure monitoring system, along with auto LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers for added convenience. However, the Windsor EV lacks ADAS features, which are available in some competitors like the MG Hector.

While the vehicle has not undergone a Bharat NCAP crash test, its global counterpart, the Wuling Cloud, has received strong safety ratings. The Windsor EV offers a lifetime battery warranty (8 years/1.6 lakh km for second owners) and a 3-year/unlimited km vehicle warranty. An assured 60% buyback after three years also improves its resale value. Although the safety features are comprehensive, the lack of ADAS is a drawback compared to rivals like the Tata Nexon EV.

competition

The MG Windsor EV competes with several popular electric vehicles, including the Tata Nexon EV (₹12.49-15.99 lakh, 465 km range), Mahindra XUV400 (₹15.49-17.69 lakh, 456 km range), and Hyundai Creta Electric (₹17.99-23.50 lakh, 473 km range). While the Nexon EV offers better range and sharper handling, it has a smaller 425-liter boot. The XUV400 matches power but feels outdated inside. The Creta Electric offers luxury and superior range but comes at a higher price.

The Windsor EV’s strengths lie in its price, space, and innovative Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option, which makes EV ownership more accessible. While its 331 km range is a bit limited compared to its competitors, the Windsor EV stands out for its affordability and tech-packed features, with an emphasis on family comfort and convenience.

final verdict

The 2025 MG Windsor EV is a masterstroke for budget-conscious families craving space, tech, and electric efficiency. Its 604-liter boot, lounge-like seats, and giant touchscreen scream premium, while the ₹13.50 lakh price (or ₹9.99 lakh with BaaS) undercuts rivals like the Tata Nexon EV. Touchscreen-heavy controls frustrate, and the lack of ADAS stings, yet six airbags and a lifetime battery warranty keep it practical. With over 20,000 units sold, it’s a market darling, blending affordability with flair. If you want a feature-packed EV for city life, the Windsor’s tough to top—just plan charging carefully.
