overview

Launched in April 2023, the MG Comet EV has quickly become India’s most affordable electric vehicle, with over 25,000 units sold by April 2025. Its price range of ₹4.99 lakh to ₹9.84 lakh (ex-showroom) with Battery-as-a-Service at ₹2.5/km for battery rental makes it a standout in the budget EV market. It is offered in five variants: Executive, Excite, Excite FC, Exclusive, and Exclusive FC.

The Comet’s compact size—2,974 mm long with a 4.2-meter turning radius—makes it a parking dream. And its 350-liter boot offers unexpected utility for such a small car. The 2025 update adds features like rear-view cameras, power-folding ORVMs, and a special Blackstorm Edition. However, with a 230 km range (real-world range drops to around 180-200 km) and the lack of fast charging on most trims, it’s clearly designed for short commutes within the city.

It competes with cars like the Tata Tiago EV and PMV Eas-E but stands out for its customization options and tech features, though it may not appeal to everyone due to its two-door configuration and limited range.

engine and performance

The MG Comet EV is powered by a 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery paired with a rear-axle motor. It produces 42 hp and 110 Nm of torque, which translates to a 0-100 km/h time of 10 seconds and a top speed of 101 km/h (81 km/h in Eco mode). The ARAI-certified range is 230 km, but in real-world conditions, expect closer to 180-200 km, which is more than enough for most city commutes (20-30 km per day).

Charging the Comet is done through a 3.3 kW AC charger, which takes about 7 hours to fully charge the battery from 0 to 100%. A faster 7.4 kW charger is available on the higher trims, reducing the charging time to 3.5 hours. However, there’s no DC fast charging option, which could be a limitation for those looking for quicker top-ups during longer trips. The Comet offers three driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport, with the latter providing a punchy response for city traffic. There are also three regen levels, though the touchscreen controls for regen can be a bit distracting while driving. The car is nimble and responsive in the city, but highway performance is limited by its modest power output, and full loads tend to dull acceleration.

Ride and Handling

At just 815 kg, the MG Comet EV feels light and agile. Its 4.2-meter turning radius allows for sharp U-turns and effortless parking, making it ideal for urban driving. The suspension setup, with a MacPherson strut in the front and a multi-link rear suspension, absorbs small bumps effectively, though the taller height (1,640 mm) and narrow 145/70 R12 tires do cause some body roll in corners.

While the 165 mm ground clearance is adequate for speed bumps and curbs, it’s not ideal for rough or uneven roads. The electric steering is light and perfect for maneuvering in tight spaces, but it starts to feel less stable at higher speeds (above 80 km/h). There’s noticeable road noise in the cabin, and the lack of a rear wiper can make visibility a challenge during rainy weather. Overall, the Comet EV is fantastic for city errands but falls short on highways, where it shows its limitations.

interior

Inside, the Comet EV surprises with its premium feel despite its compact size and affordable price tag. The cabin features twin 10.25-inch screens—one for infotainment and the other for the driver—which offer a crisp display and seamless integration with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. MG’s iSmart suite adds more than 55 connected features, making it feel like the car of the future.

The interior upholstery comes in Space Grey or Knight-Black fabric for lower trims, with leatherette options available for higher trims. The flat floor design and 50:50 split rear seats maximize the cabin space, making it surprisingly spacious for four occupants. The boot space is also generous, offering a 350-liter capacity—perfect for groceries or small luggage. However, there’s no front trunk (frunk). Other notable features include keyless entry, a digital key, steering-mounted controls, and over-the-air updates.

However, the lack of auto climate control and a wireless charging pad is a noticeable omission. The interior does get dirty easily due to the light color choices, and the under-thigh support for longer journeys is lacking. The two-door layout may also make rear-seat access a bit cumbersome.

exterior

The Comet EV has a distinct and quirky design that immediately grabs attention. With a length of just 2,974 mm and a height of 1,640 mm, it looks small but stands tall with a boxy, cube-like shape. Its front features a full-width LED DRL bar, low-set projector headlamps, and an illuminated MG logo, giving it a sleek, futuristic look. It ditches the traditional grille in favor of a more minimalist design. The two doors and fixed rear porthole windows add to its character, while the connected LED taillights and chrome accents give it a more refined finish. Available in five colors—Starry Black, Candy White, Aurora Silver, Apple Green with a Black roof, and Candy White with a Black roof—the standout color is undoubtedly Apple Green, which gives the car an even more striking appearance.

The Blackstorm Edition, priced at ₹7.80 lakh, gives it an even sportier look with gloss-black trim and 145/70 R12 tires mounted on sporty alloys. The base trim comes with steel wheels, which are a little less flashy. Ground clearance stands at 165 mm, making it suitable for city roads but not built for rougher terrains. The car can also be customized with over 250 different graphic and sticker combinations, making it stand out even more. However, the small wheels do look a little out of place considering the car’s tall height.

safety

In terms of safety, the MG Comet EV covers the basics but doesn’t offer class-leading protection. Standard features across all trims include two airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, hill-hold assist, and an electronic parking brake. The mid trims for 2025 also get a rear-view camera, reverse parking sensors, tire pressure monitoring, and ISOFIX child seat anchors.

The Blackstorm Edition includes front disc brakes, while the base models use a combination of disc and drum brakes. However, there’s no Bharat NCAP rating yet, and the absence of six airbags and ADAS features like lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control puts it behind rivals like the Tata Tiago EV in terms of safety tech.

Still, the high-strength body with 17 hot-stamped panels feels sturdy, and the lifetime battery warranty (8 years/1.2 lakh km) ensures peace of mind for owners. It’s a safe car for daily city driving, but families may want more advanced safety features for longer trips.

competition

The MG Comet EV competes with other budget-friendly EVs like the Tata Tiago EV (₹7.99-11.14 lakh), the PMV Eas-E (₹4.79 lakh), and the Citroen eC3 (₹11.61-13.41 lakh). While the Tiago EV offers more range and fast charging, it lacks the Comet’s compact charm and tech features. The Eas-E is cheaper but lacks the features and refinement of the Comet. The eC3 offers better range but is almost twice as expensive. The Comet shines with its ₹4.99 lakh starting price, its compact dimensions that make it perfect for city driving, and its tech-savvy features. But its two-door design and relatively short range (180-200 km in real-world conditions) might make it a less practical choice for some buyers. If you’re looking for a fun, affordable, and quirky city car, the Comet stands out, but if you need more range or versatility, other options might be better.

final verdict

The 2025 MG Comet EV is a game-changer for budget-conscious urban drivers. It brings tech, style, and practicality to a car that costs as little as ₹4.99 lakh (with Battery-as-a-Service). Its compact size and impressive tech features, like twin 10.25-inch screens, make it stand out in the crowded EV market.

However, the two-door layout and limited range of 180-200 km make it ideal as a city car but less suited for long-distance travel. If you're after a second car for short daily commutes, the Comet’s unique personality, affordability, and tech package make it a solid choice. But for those who need more range or want a car with more doors, other options like the Tata Tiago EV may be more practical.
