MG Comet is currently enjoying a solo run in a segment it has created. The hyper-urban segment is touted as the next big thing when it comes to EVs. The Comet has a niche but quite popular appeal for folks looking for an extremely maneuverable and practical car. MG has even sweetened the deal recently by offering BaaS, where you only have to pay for the car (around 5 lakhs) and approximately 3.5 rupees per km traveled.
All this might come to an end soon, as Vietnamese startup VinFast is gearing up for an Indian debut with its own Comet rival, the VF3.

MG Comet vs. VinFast VF3 Exterior
When it comes to the exterior, both the Comet and VF3 have a "moving cubicle" sort of vibe, with boxy designs that reminded me of Syros. The VF3's design is more composed overall, with strong square aesthetics, while the Comet is a mixed bag of various design elements.

The MG Comet EV is designed to look dynamic and agile. Its compact footprint, with dimensions that allow it to navigate narrow streets, is accentuated by sharp lines and modern design elements. The “Gamer Edition” variants even include personalized styling cues such as bespoke body graphics, unique alloy designs, and special trim options that help it stand out in a crowded market.
The VF3’s design is marked by a robust, boxy profile. Its dimensions are slightly larger compared to the Comet EV, offering a bit more presence on the road. The front fascia is defined by a bold VF logo, square headlights, and a blacked-out bumper that gives it a rugged yet contemporary look. Even though it sports a two-door layout, its interior space has been optimized so that entering and exiting the vehicle remains easy.

MG Comet vs. VinFast VF3 Interior
I am a big fan of simplicity, and being economical and tiny, both the Comet and VF3 are built around that philosophy.
Step inside the MG Comet EV, and you’re greeted by a cabin that’s all about tech and connectivity. The top-end trims like Executive and Excite get a 10.25-inch integrated floating touchscreen that serves as the hub for its infotainment system, complete with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Although it’s a compact two-door, the Comet EV’s four-seat configuration is intelligently designed to provide enough legroom for city commutes.
The VinFast VF3 tells a similar story. From what I can gather from pictures, a 10-inch infotainment system sits at the center of the dashboard with some basic HVAC controls—and that’s about it! The layout is intentionally uncluttered, which not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also ensures that drivers can access controls with ease—a crucial factor in stop-and-go urban traffic.
While the VF3 is designed to accommodate up to five passengers, I’m pretty sure it’s more of a "2 adults and 2 kids" type of deal.

MG Comet vs. VinFast VF3 Range and Performance
The MG Comet EV is powered by a 17.3 kWh Li-ion battery that drives a 42 hp electric motor, delivering a robust 110 Nm of torque. This setup is engineered to offer an estimated range of around 230 km on a single charge. I once witnessed the dash showing 199 kilometers at 97% SOC at a stoplight.
Standard charging on a 3.3 kW AC charger takes about 7 hours, while the 7.2 kW unit does the job in just 2.5 hours.
The upcoming VinFast VF3 is equipped with an 18.64 kWh battery pack, slightly larger than that in the Comet EV, and a motor that produces 43.5 bhp with 110 Nm of torque. The VF3’s performance is optimized for urban settings, providing a range of approximately 215 km per charge.
One of its standout features is its fast-charging capability—capable of reaching 70% battery charge in just 36 minutes. This rapid charging technology is a key selling point for busy urban dwellers who may not have the luxury of long charging stops.

Safety & Verdict
Safety is a non-negotiable factor for any modern vehicle. The MG Comet EV comes with a host of standard safety features, including ABS and EBD. Its construction emphasizes a high-strength body with multiple hot-stamped panels for added rigidity and impact resistance.
I feel that airbags should have been standard, as collisions at even low speeds like 40 kmph can be quite significant.
The VinFast VF3’s safety features are yet to be released, along with its price. The MG Comet has clocked an average of 5,000 sales annually. The VF3 offers better space and features and, from the looks of it, could provide better handling and a more value-for-money proposition overall. The only thing VinFast needs to do right now is bring this game-changer to our cities and price it under 10 lakhs.
