The Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet are India’s two most affordable EVs without any doubt. However, there are significant differences between them that can baffle first-time EV buyers. Are you too in search of your first entry-level EV car?

Let’s dive deeper into the exterior, interior/ infotainment, specifications, and range to make your life easier.

Aesthetics: Conventional Tiago EV vs. Quirky MG Comet

Well, well visually speaking, the MG Comet is very different from the rather conservative Tata Tiago EV

People are used to seeing the ICE Tiago on the roads for almost a decade now. Hence, the Tiago EV won’t leave a lasting impression or garner curiosity. However, the MG Comet’s compact and cube-like appearance often grabs eyeballs wherever you go.

To make things a bit more interesting, Tata has gone ahead with a subtle design change.

Say, for example, the halogens are out and make way for the LED headlamps, redesigned front bumper, new boomerang-shaped LEDs, and the signature blue strip in the front is now replaced by a more classy silver one. Plus, the 14-inch wheel design is also new.

The MG Comet stands out with the newly launched Blackstorm Edition, which features attractive ‘Starry Black’ paint with dark chrome accents. Overall, both cars are well-styled according to their respective brands’ design language. The Tata Tiago EV misses out on Tata’s new-gen Acti.ev platform, which debuted on the Punch EV.

The Comet was always based on SAIC-GM-Wuling's GSEV platform.

How are the interiors of the Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet?

Just like the exteriors, the interior designs of these cars are quite different. The 2025 Tiago EV interior feels solid, just like you would expect from any Tata car. The front seats offer good comfort and support for longer journeys. Also, the rear seat comfort is comparatively better as the Tiago is a five-seater, unlike the Comet.

Also, the proper four-door body profile makes it a more family-oriented car in the mindset of customers.

To be honest, Tiago EV was never strong on the infotainment front. Anyways, the 2025 model year has worked on its shortcomings.

It now comes with a 10.25-inch wide infotainment screen, something that’s common to the Punch EV. Even the instrument gauge cluster sports a new design with an MID in the centre and two digital gauges for the battery level and regeneration braking levels. The MID boasts a multitude of information and thus feels cramped at times.

The MG Comet interior feels futuristic and minimal, to say the least. The boxy profile elevates a sense of space inside the cabin. Most of the areas inside the cabin are well-built and feel upmarket. The 10.25-inch dual-screen setup is very modern and the least you can expect in cars today.

Despite the clever interior design and feeling of roominess, the Comet isn’t quite comfortable.

The front seats have fewer adjustments and lack sufficient cushion support. Owing to the two-door body profile, the entry and exit for the rear passengers though easy, but does not feel natural. Anyways, it will fit two passengers at the rear with ease and offer very similar legroom to the Tiago.

It’s quite surprising as the Tiago rides on a longer wheelbase than the Comet, but kudos to MG on that front.

The boot space is the weakest part for the MG Comet as it's pretty negligible with the rear seats in position. However, when the rear seats are folded, there’s 350 litres of boot space.

So, it’s either your luggage or the rear seat passengers for travel. Fortunately, there’s no such shortcoming on the Tiago EV, and there’s 240 litres of boot space (without the parcel tray) even with the rear seats in position and accommodating three passengers.

How’s the performance of the most affordable EVs in India?

The Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet are not synonymous with performance. At their price points, it’s quite unreasonable to ask for great performance, and there’s not much to complain about here.

Talking about the Tata Tiago EV, it’s driven by a front-axle mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor outputting 75 PS and 114 Nm of torque in the top-tier LR trims, while the lower-tier MR trims deliver 61 PS and 110 Nm of torque. The performance figures (0-60 kmph) for the LR and MR trims are 5.7 seconds and 6.2 seconds, respectively.

On the other hand, the MG Comet relies on a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor with 42 PS and 110 Nm of torque. Certainly, the MG Comet had to be the slower EV here, and it is. While OEM performance figures are not available, few customers have reported the 0-60 kmph time to be in the vicinity of 7.6 seconds.

It also misses out on different regenerative levels, while the Tiago EV offers different levels of regen braking for a more controlled driving experience.

What about the range and charging of the Tiago EV and MG Comet?

A common anxiety and probably the most crucial one among first-time EV buyers is that of range and charging times. The Tata Tiago EV models come with two different battery packs, and hence their range differs depending on the trim configuration.

The 19.2 kWh battery pack in the MR trims take 6.9 hrs with a 15A plug (10%-100%), while a 7.2 kw fast charger will top it up in 2.6 hrs. Any external fast DC Charger will charge it in just about 58 minutes.

The larger battery pack takes about 8.7 hrs, 3.6 hrs and 58 minutes, respectively, with the above mentioned means. Talking about the MG Comet, a 3.3 kw charger will charge its 17.4 kWh battery from 0% to 100% in 7 hrs, while a 0% to 80% charge will take 5.5 hrs. With a 7.4 kw charger, the Comet can be charged in 3.5 hrs.

With a 50 kw DC fast charger, it can be charged 0% to 80% in 60 minutes.

Tiago EV with a smaller battery pack can travel up to 223 kms as per the CFCR cycle, while the C75 real-world range is 168 kms.

With the larger battery pack, its range increases to 293 km and 205 km, respectively. Coming to MG Comet, it can travel up to 230 km as per ARAI, while consumers have reported a real-world range of 191 km.

What about the pricing of India’s most affordable electric cars?

The pricing plays an important part in the sales of any car, but more so for electric cars as they have to be worthy of the price tag over ICE cars. Talking about pricing, the Comet have a clear edge over Tiago EV owing to MG’s BaaS model where the buyer only pays for the car and uses the battery as a service / subscription.

On the other hand, there’s no such option with the Tiago EV. Check out the pricing below for both cars.

Model Tata Tiago EVMG Comet
Price (Ex showroom)Rs 7.99 - Rs 11.15 lakhRs 7.35 - Rs 9.86 lakh
With the BaaS modelN/ARs 4.99 - Rs 7.49 lakh + (Rs 2.9 per km )

Which one is a solid pick?

Just like two sides of a coin, both these cars have their pros and cons. However, in terms of pricing, these cars are very much in line with smaller hatchbacks in the market.

So, pricing is one of their USPs. Overall, considering recent updates, practicality for five passengers, Tata’s widespread service network, better performance, very good warranty benefits, 4-star NCAP safety, and robust build quality, our choice would be the Tata Tiago EV amongst the two.
