  • In CNG mode, the Tigor is pretty lethargic to drive

  • NVH from the three-cylinder engine is among the worst in its segment
  • Dzire has a 5-star safety rating and is way more comprehensively refreshed

Tata Tigor Review

overview

The Tata Tigor is a well-built and safe compact sedan with a 4-star GNCAP rating. It offers a comfortable ride, a sturdy cabin, and a practical 419-liter boot. The 1.2L petrol engine is smooth in the city but lacks punch on highways, and the AMT gearbox feels slow at times.

Rear seat space is decent, though taller passengers may find headroom tight. While not the most powerful in its segment, the Tigor stands out with its strong build, good ride quality, and value-for-money appeal, making it a solid choice for buyers prioritizing safety and practicality.

engine and performance

My Tata Tigor manual is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder Revotron petrol engine. This naturally aspirated unit puts out about 86 hp and 113 Nm.
For those prioritizing fuel efficiency, the 1.2-litre petrol-CNG engine paired with the manual transmission is a great option. In CNG mode, the power output remains at 74 hp and 96 Nm.

Notably, the updated Tigor CNG can now start directly in CNG mode, thanks to a revised ECU system. The 5-speed manual gearbox offers smooth shifts, contributing positively to the overall driving experience in both petrol and CNG modes. The NVH from the engine is not that positive, with a very rough sound coming during idling, startup, and low-speed driving.

I do notice some vibrations, typical of a three-cylinder engine, particularly at idle. The power is pretty lethargic in CNG but is okay enough for highway driving once you get up and running. The clutch, however, is pretty light with a slightly long travel and very relaxing in the city, although for heavy city commuters, AMT would be an ideal choice.

In terms of fuel efficiency, my petrol manual Tigor gives me around 15.28 kmpl. The CNG variant, however, boasts significantly higher fuel economy, with a claimed figure of approximately 26.4 km/kg. In real-world conditions, I get around 24.5 km/kg with the CNG, which gives me a range of close to 300 kilometers on a full tank.

Ride and Handling

The suspension system effectively absorbs minor road imperfections and provides a relatively smooth experience for me and my passengers. I've noticed the suspension's capability to handle less-than-ideal road conditions without transmitting excessive vibrations into the cabin.

In the CNG variant, the rear suspension has been retuned to accommodate the added weight of the CNG cylinders while maintaining a ground clearance of 165mm, which is slightly lower than the petrol variant's potential 170mm.

In terms of handling, my Tata Tigor manual is tuned more towards comfort rather than sporty driving dynamics. It exhibits a tendency to understeer when cornering, which is typical for vehicles in this segment. The steering feel is light, making it convenient for maneuvering in city traffic and during parking. However, it might not provide significant feedback or weigh up considerably at higher speeds, which might not appeal to drivers seeking a more engaging driving experience on open roads.

interior

The interior of the Tata Tigor manual has also received updates for the 2025 model year, including a new instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch floating infotainment display in higher trims. Leatherette seats are available in select higher variants.

The story in terms of comfort is the same as the rest of Tata products. Front seats have good thigh room and legroom, while the rear seats are polar opposite and not comfortable enough for long journeys.

The base XM variant features a manual HVAC system, fabric seats, a fully digital instrument cluster, an illuminated flat-bottom steering wheel, front power windows, and tilt-adjustable steering.

The XZ Plus variant adds a 10.25-inch infotainment display, a rear parking camera, automatic climate control, automatic headlamps, and an 8-speaker sound system.

The top-spec XZ Plus Lux variant further enhances the interior with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four additional tweeters (potentially totaling 12 speakers with the 8-speaker system), push-button start/stop, fully automatic temperature control, a cooled glove box, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a front Type-C charging port, vanity mirror, and magazine pockets. This variant also features a Harman Kardon infotainment system.

The CNG variant utilizes a unique twin-cylinder setup to maximize boot space, reportedly capable of accommodating two cabin bags along with other items.

exterior

The Tata Tigor boasts a distinctive exterior design, characterized by its sleek and compact dimensions and a coupe-like sloping roofline. The front fascia features an aggressive grille and sharp headlamp design, contributing to its overall sporty appearance. The 2025 model year has brought minor cosmetic changes, including new LED headlights and potentially updated wheel designs. A new two-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo has also been introduced. The CNG variant is also available in a new Meteor Bronze color option.

The Tata Tigor has a length of around 3995 mm, a width of approximately 1677 mm, and a height of about 1532 mm, with a wheelbase of 2450 mm. These compact dimensions make it well-suited for navigating congested urban environments.

Key exterior features vary depending on the specific variant. The base XM variant comes equipped with 14-inch steel wheels and a boot lip spoiler. The XT variant adds 14-inch dual-tone full wheel covers, body-colored door handles, and Follow Me Home headlamps. Moving up the range, the XZ variant features LED headlamps with LED DRLs, electrically adjustable ORVMs with turn indicators, and dual-tone hyperstyle wheels (15-inch for petrol, 14-inch for CNG). The XZ Plus variant includes front fog lamps, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, autofold ORVMs, a shark fin antenna, and chrome-lined door handles. The top-of-the-line XZ Plus Lux variant gets 15-inch dual-tone alloy wheels for the petrol version and 14-inch alloy wheels for the CNG variant, along with other premium features.

safety

Safety is a priority in my Tata Tigor manual, as evidenced by its 4-star Global NCAP safety rating achieved in 2020. Standard safety features across most manual variants likely include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors. Higher trims benefit from advanced safety features such as a 360-degree camera, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and Hill Hold Control (HHC).

The CNG variant incorporates specific safety measures, including a micro switch that automatically shuts off the vehicle when the fuel filler flap is opened, and a fire extinguisher is also provided. The Tata Tigor is built with a high-strength steel body structure, contributing to enhanced crash protection.
