September was a decent month, not a great one. The segment sold 3.60 lakh cars, about 7,500 more than August. That is a small recovery, and it is the kind of month you get just before the festive rush starts.
The bigger thing to notice is how little has changed all year.
Every month since February has landed between 3.6 and 3.9 lakh. January's 4.94 lakh now looks like a one-off, probably December stock being pushed through. Maruti has stopped growing but is still selling more than the next three makers put together. Tata had the worst month of the three big players, down 6.8% to its lowest figure of 2026, and it has now slipped behind both Mahindra and Hyundai. Add Mahindra's EV arm and Mahindra quietly overtakes Tata for the first time.
October should be the biggest month of the year. Navratri starts mid-October and Diwali falls in early November, so both sit in the same quarter. Expect 4.2 to 4.5 lakh, then a sharp December drop as buyers wait for new-year registration.

| BMW India | 1,955 | 1,482 | +31.9% | 15,348 |
| Mercedes-Benz India | 1,527 | 1,250 | +22.2% | 12,768 |
| Jaguar Land Rover India | 573 | 617 | −7.1% | 4,940 |
| Volvo Auto India | 126 | 119 | +5.9% | 1,262 |
| Porsche | 56 | 58 | −3.4% | 472 |
| Lamborghini | 6 | 5 | +20.0% | 55 |
| Segment Total | 4,243 | 3,531 | +20.2% | 34,845 |
Luxury had the best month of the three segments, up 20.2%. That sounds dramatic, but remember the whole segment sells in a single month what Maruti sells in a day, so it swings easily.
Almost all of the jump came from two brands. BMW sold 1,955 cars, its best month of 2026, and Mercedes added 1,527. Together they are 82% of the segment. This pattern repeats every year. Luxury buyers wait for the festive window and year-end bonuses, so dealers start filling showrooms in September for deliveries in October and November. The September number is really an October number arriving early.
JLR and Porsche went the other way, but both deal in hundreds or dozens of units, so a few cars either way changes the percentage. Ignore those moves.
The last quarter is always the strongest for luxury in India. Expect BMW and Mercedes to stay above 1,800 and 1,500, with the segment running 4,500 to 5,000 a month through December.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tata Passenger Electric Mobility | 14,333 | 13,422 | +6.8% | 98,160 |
| Mahindra Electric Automobile | 7,360 | 6,602 | +11.5% | 54,017 |

| VinFast Auto India | 816 | 793 | +2.9% | 7,347 |
| Tesla India | 279 | 117 | +138.5% | 749 |
| Segment Total | 23,617 | 21,495 | +9.9% | 1,65,738 |
This is the only part of the market that is genuinely growing. EVs sold 23,617 cars in September against roughly 13,300 in January, a 77% rise over nine months, while petrol and diesel volumes went sideways or down.
Tata still leads with 14,333, but Mahindra is the more interesting number. It has gone from 3,613 in January to 7,360 now, more than doubling, and it is growing faster than Tata every month. On current pace it is a serious threat to Tata's lead by early 2027.
Tesla's 279 is small but it is the first month deliveries look real rather than token. BYD jumped 48%, though off a tiny base.
EVs are 6.1% of September's total, and the true figure is higher because MG's electric sales sit inside JSW MG's overall number.
October should take the segment past 26,000 on festive demand.
